Topics covered in Online Safety Training
Topic 1: the risks we all face online
The importance of online safety as a vital life skill, how we all interact with technology, risky behaviour, the risks we all face online – both adults and children – including damage to reputation, bullying, deception, exploitation, revenge porn, and identity theft.
Topic 2: the risks that children face online
How much children know about the online world compared to adults, the online behaviour of children and young people, how children and young people interact with social media, sites and apps, the risks that children face online, including content risks, contact risks and conduct risks.
Topic 3: the online safety act
How online service providers must identify, mitigate and manage the risks of harm from content and activity that is illegal or harmful to children. What content is to be removed or limited, and who holds responsibility for following this framework.
Topic 4: what next?
How the Online Safety Act is planned to roll out, the phases involved, and when to expect new legislation and codes of practice.
Topic 5: continuing risks
Some of the risks that children and young people may still be exposed to, including cyberbullying, grooming issues, sexually explicit messages or images, and illegal downloading. How these risks present, and how to be safer online to minimise the risk.
Topic 6: prevention and referral
Supporting children's internet use by using filters and controls, and having conversations with children or young people about online safety. How to make referrals or reports to relevant bodies, and how to support children through this.
